Knots: When You’re Going Through the Motions

Have you ever arrived somewhere and realized you don’t remember the drive?

Your body made all the turns. Stopped at all the lights. Got you exactly where you intended to go. Yet your mind was somewhere else entirely.

Many of us experience seasons like that—not just on the road, but in life.

We wake up. Go to work. Care for our families. Run errands. Pay bills. Cross things off lists. Fall into bed. Then do it all again tomorrow.

At first, this may simply feel like a busy season. But over time, something else can happen.

We stop noticing our lives while we’re living them. Days blur together. Weeks disappear. Entire seasons pass before we realize how long we’ve been operating on autopilot.

And then a quiet lie slips in: This is all there is.

The life that once felt meaningful now feels routine. The things that once brought joy barely register. We begin moving through our days rather than inhabiting them.

And because nothing feels particularly wrong, we often don’t recognize what is happening. We assume this flatness is simply adulthood. Responsibility. Reality.

But sometimes going through the motions is not a sign that life has become smaller — it’s a sign that our attention has.

We’ve become so focused on getting through our days that we’ve stopped fully entering them. We’ve stopped noticing. Stopped wondering. Stopped being surprised. Stopped bringing our whole selves to the lives we are already living.

This happens to almost everyone eventually. Long seasons of responsibility can do it. Caregiving can do it. Stress can do it. Exhaustion can do it. Habit can do it.

The answer is rarely to blow up our lives and start over. More often, the invitation is simpler.

Wake up a little. Pay attention again. Become curious again. Notice where we are, who is around us, and what still stirs something inside us.

Sometimes the first step is surprisingly small.

Taking a different route home. Eating lunch outside. Visiting a place we haven’t been in years. Reading a book instead of scrolling. Learning something new. Starting a small project. Calling someone we’ve been meaning to call. Spending ten minutes paying attention to the world around us.

None of these things will transform our lives overnight. But they can interrupt the autopilot. They can remind us that we are still here. That our lives are happening now. That this ordinary day contains more possibility than we realized.

We may simply need to reconnect with the life we’ve been carrying for so long.

Sometimes the knot begins to loosen the moment we start paying attention again.

A Prayer for When You’re Going Through the Motions

God who holds eternity,

Somewhere along the way, I have stopped fully showing up to my own life.

The days feel repetitive. The routines feel endless. And I find myself moving through them without much thought or joy.

Help me wake up to what is right in front of me. Open my eyes to the gifts, opportunities, and people I have stopped noticing.

Renew my sense of wonder. Restore my curiosity. Teach me to be present in the life You have given me today.

And help me recognize that even ordinary days can be filled with Your presence and purpose.

Amen.
