Knots: A Letter for Hard Days
Some days simply ask more of us than we have to give.
We may not even be able to name exactly why today feels heavy. There may be no single crisis, no clear explanation—just a sense of weariness that settles into our body and makes even ordinary things feel difficult.
The dishes feel harder. The email feels harder. The conversation feels harder. Even small decisions seem to require more energy than usual.
On days like that, it’s easy to become frustrated with ourselves. We look at everything we meant to accomplish. Everything we should be handling. Everything that seems easy for everyone else. And we wonder why we’re struggling just to make it through the day.
But hard days are part of being human.
Sometimes they follow grief, stress, disappointment, or exhaustion. Sometimes they arrive for reasons we cannot fully explain. Either way, they have a way of distorting our perspective.
A difficult morning becomes evidence that the entire week is ruined. A discouraging moment becomes evidence that nothing is going right. Today’s struggle starts trying to tell us the story of our whole lives.
But hard days rarely stay in their lane. They start making promises about tomorrow. They start offering conclusions about who we are. They start convincing us that what we feel right now is what we will feel forever.
But a hard day is just a day.
Not a verdict.
Not a prophecy.
Not the whole story.
If today feels heavier than usual, we have to resist the urge to evaluate our entire life from inside this moment. Tomorrow may look different. Next week may look different. The situation that feels overwhelming right now may not feel the same once we’ve had some rest, some space, or simply a little more time.
For now, perhaps the most helpful thing we can do is to simply make the horizon smaller.
Drink a glass of water. Step outside for a few minutes. Take a shower. Call a friend. Postpone major decisions until another day. Do the next small thing. Then the next.
We do not need to solve any more today. We do not need to answer every question. We do not need to carry tomorrow.
Today is asking enough of you already.
And tomorrow is a brand new day.
A Prayer for Hard Days
God of mercy,
Today feels heavier than I expected. I do not have answers for all of it. I do not even understand all of it. But You know what I am carrying.
Help me resist the temptation to turn today’s struggles into tomorrow’s certainty. When discouragement starts telling me stories about my future, remind me that I cannot see the whole picture from where I stand today.
Give me grace for what is in front of me. Give me wisdom for the next small step. Help me stop borrowing trouble from tomorrow and return my attention to what is actually mine to carry right now.
And when my strength feels limited, remind me that I do not have to carry everything at once. Help me receive rest without guilt, ask for help when I need it, and trust that my limits do not make me a failure.
Help me find my footing in this moment. And help me trust that this hard day is not the whole story.
Amen.
