Knots: When You’re Exhausted
If you are exhausted, truly exhausted—not just tired at the end of a long day, but bone-weary, soul-heavy, worn down in ways sleep alone does not seem to fix—I want you to know this first:
Your exhaustion is not a spiritual failure.
There are seasons when faithfulness looks like endurance, and endurance looks like showing up with very little left. There are seasons when you are doing the work of loving God and others simply by not quitting, even when everything in you wants to lie down and stay there.
God is not disappointed in you for being tired.
Scripture is full of faithful people who collapsed under the weight of what they were carrying.
Elijah slept under a broom tree. The Israelites grew weary in the wilderness. Even Jesus, fully given to His calling, stopped, withdrew, and rested.
Weariness is not evidence that you have wandered off the path. Often, it means you are still on it.
If you are exhausted, you may feel tempted to push harder, to prove your devotion by forcing yourself forward. But exhaustion should be invitation instead to release. To stop arguing with your limits. To let yourself be human again.
You are allowed to need rest.
You are allowed to say, “This is too much right now.”
You are allowed to receive care rather than produce fruit.
God does not ask more of you than you can give. And when you have very little to give, God meets you there, not with demands, but with mercy.
If this is a hard season, let your prayer be small. Let your faith be quiet. Let your obedience be as simple as breathing in and breathing out, trusting that even now, God is holding you.
A Prayer for When You’re Exhausted
God of mercy,
I come to You tired, carrying more than I can manage.
Help me to stop arguing with my limits
and to receive them as part of Your care for me.
Where my strength is gone, be my strength.
Where my patience is thin, meet me with gentleness.
Where I feel pressure to push through, grant me permission to rest.
Teach me that I do not have to earn Your love.
Hold me when I have nothing left to give.
Let Your peace settle into my body, my mind, and my soul.
Amen.
